On January 3. 2020. at the sixth meeting of the Central Committee for Financial and Economic Affairs, General Secretary Xi Jinping called for advancing the Chengdu-Chongqing economic zone to cultivate a pivotal hub for high-quality development in western China. The Report to the 20th CPC National Congress reinforced this objective. The Third Plenary Session of the 20th CPC Central Committee reiterated the need to achieve solid and deeper progress in developing the economic zone. Over the past five years, Sichuan and Chongqing have operated as one coherent entity, working in concert to perform their roles in China's 'City Duet' well. Their close collaboration has accelerated efforts to establish four hubs with nationwide influence: an economic center, a sci-tech innovation center, a new frontier of reform and opening-up, and a high-quality living environment.

The "Five-Year Research Report on the Development of the Chengdu-Chongqing Twin City Economic Circle" (edited by Liu Yang and Fang Ning) is the first in-depth study, analysis, interpretation and proposal on the achievements of the Chengdu-Chongqing Twin-City Economic Circle construction over the past five years. It includes a five-year photo exhibition of the Chengdu-Chongqing Twin-City Economic Circle, a main report, special reports, and appendices. To effectively leverage the intellectual support of new think tanks, the Chongqing-Chengdu Economic Circle Research Institute, China Economic Think Tank, Beijing Jingshi Run Education Technology Research Institute and other institutions have formed an expert group to develop an indicator system for the high-quality development efficiency assessment of the Chongqing-Chengdu Economic Circle with independent intellectual property rights. They have also compiled the "2025 High-Quality Development Performance Evaluation Index Report for the Chengdu-Chongqing Twin City Economic Circle" and the "2024", and released the overall ranking of high-quality development efficiency of cities in the Chongqing-Chengdu Economic Circle in 2025. as well as the special rankings in six fields including economic growth, collaborative technological innovation, stable promotion and expansion of consumption, joint governance and protection of the ecological environment, reform and opening up, and improvement of people's livelihood. Building a new international brand for S&T corridors—paralleling the China-Europe Railway Express (Chengdu-Chongqing) and New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor—as the third strategic channel.
